Employee engagement is built on trust. Diversity and inclusion is an important factor.
“Trust is defined as “a psychological state comprising the intention to accept vulnerability based upon positive expectations of the intentions or behaviour of another”. Employee engagement is defined as “a positive, fulfilling, work-related state of mind that is characterized by vigor, dedication, and absorption”.”1
Unfortunately, “millions of Americans today go to work fearing losing their jobs because of who they are or who they love. No current federal law protects LGBT workers from employment discrimination. According to surveys, more than 40% of lesbian, gay, and bisexual people and almost 90% of transgender people have experienced employment discrimination, harassment or mistreatment. This is not only bad for LGBT workers, it is also bad for business.
According to the Business Case for Diversity, today’s workforce is increasingly diverse in terms of personal characteristics such as race, ethnicity, gender, national origin, religion, gender identity, and sexual orientation. In turn, it’s found that a well-managed diverse workforce will both reduce costs and generate greater profit. Clearly, presenting business owners with an incentive to take action and incorporate LGBT supportive workplace policies.”2
The 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan were a tipping point in the Gay Liberation Movement in the US. In honor, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community celebrates June as LGBT Pride Month.3
The last Sunday in June is typically designated as Gay Pride Day and many communities hold events. One of the largest celebrations takes place in New York City. “In 2017, we were joined by over 450+ unique marching contingents, representing a vast array of nonprofits, community organizations, corporate partners, small businesses, political candidates and activists! With over 110 floats making the trek down Fifth Avenue, last year’s March was one of the largest and most exciting in history.”4 It was estimated that over 2 million spectators watched the 7+ hour March.
The 2018 Pride March takes place on Sunday, June 24th. If you are searching for a company that is LGBT-friendly, consider these Greater NYC companies that are embracing diversity and inclusion in the workplace and are sponsoring and/or participating in The March 2018 – NYC Pride.
