The goal of DarrenDaily is to provide useful and easily actionable information to help you become more successful. Today, I want to pass along some information I gained from one of the DarrenDaily videos, entitled, “The Naked Truth.” The premise of the video is that where you are now – your current circumstance – is directly related to the choices you’ve made so far. And he’s not just talking about the “big choices” we make, it’s about ALL the choices we make and how they’ve led us to where we are now.

As an example, let’s look at a manager who is currently unhappy in their role. This scenario isn’t a stretch since according to Gallup, “The sought-after talent combination that characterizes great managers only exists in about one in 10 people. Another two in 10 people have some of the five talents and can become successful managers with the right coaching and development.”2

What choices would have put our manager in this circumstance?

 

Choices Outside of Work

There are many choices we make outside of the workplace that impact our ability to be effective in our roles.  Below are 6 such considerations. Each of the choices below links to a prior post that discussed their importance and impact.

  1. Choice: Mindfulness
  2. Choice: Sleep
  3. Choice: Nutrition
  4. Choice: Exercise
  5. Choice: Learning
  6. Choice: Disengagement

 

Workplace Choices

Work is all about choices. Let’s consider 20 of them as they relate to our unhappy manager. Keep in mind, if our manager isn’t making a choice to practice Mindfulness, he/she could be unconsciously making choices.

  1. Choice: Accepting the manager role when offered
  2. Choice: How he/she commutes to work and what he/she does during the commute
  3. Choice: Hours spent working
  4. Choice: Asking for help in being more effective in the manager role
  5. Choice: Asking for feedback
  6. Choice: Whether or not to incorporate the performance feedback received
  7. Choice: Building relationships with other managers
  8. Choice: Where, with whom, and if he/she eats lunch
  9. Choice: Listening
  10. Choice: Talking
  11. Choice: How he/she manages others, i.e., autocratic, laissez-faire, chaotic, etc.3
  12. Choice: Building relationships with direct reports
  13. Choice: Providing continuous feedback to his/her direct reports
  14. Choice: To whom assign projects
  15. Choice: Bias/favoritism
  16. Choice: How deal with conflict
  17. Choice: How prepared is he/she for meetings
  18. Choice: How handle difficult situations
  19. Choice: How much time he/she makes for others
  20. Choice: Involvement in work-related activities, i.e., volunteer work, happy hours, etc.

 

If we considered just these 20 choices, we would be able to discover why our manager is unhappy and help him/her understand how previous decisions are impacting their current circumstances.

 

Given the number of choices we make each day, we don’t recognize their compound effect.  That’s why we need to be more conscious of the decisions we make and then take it a step further by rating ourselves on how good each decision is. Did our decision move us forward or set us back because we failed to make the right call or didn’t make any call at all? Darren Hardy believes we should score our decisions in terms of winning and losing. He recommends keep track of and review our progress each day. Did we make more winning decisions or losing decisions?

 

In the end, our choices define our success or our failure. I hope you’ll be more aware of the decisions you are making each day and whether they are winners or losers.
