Being a manager isn’t easy. How can you tell if you are an effective manager or a poor manager? Read the 9 statements below. If you relate to any of them then you might be a poor manager.
You might be a poor manager if…
- Your open door policy applies to when you enter or leave your office.
- You go all Voldemort when your house elves don’t apparate like Dobby the second you need something.1
- You are listed in the dictionary under T for “Tas, Tasmanian. Here it is. ‘A strong, murderous beast, jaws as powerful as a steel trap – has ravenous appetite – eats tigers, lions, elephants, buffaloes, donkeys, giraffes, octopuses, rhinoceroses, mooses, ducks…’”2
- Your favorite quote is by Peter Gibbons: “It’s not that I’m lazy, it’s that I just don’t care.”3You wonder whether it is difficult for others to be around you when you’re always right.
- You “cannot be left alone to [your] devices. Indecisive, from crisis to crisis.”4
- You stick your fingers in your ears and yell, “la la la la la” when someone comes to you with an idea or a problem.
- You bum-rush5 the stage to claim the recognition for your team’s hard work
And finally…
- Not even Alan Turing could decipher you.6
Which of the above was your favorite? What punch lines would you add?
