In 2015, I posted 10 TED Talks Relevant to Employee Engagement and the next year I posted 2016 TED Talks Relevant to Employee Engagement – Part 1. With this post, I continue to add to these playlists of TED Talks relevant to employee engagement.
“TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment, and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.”1
I learn a lot from the diverse topics discussed on TED.com. I hope you’ll find these TED Talks (in date order) interesting and applicable to your employee engagement and employee experience efforts. Specifically, these TED Talks are geared toward frontline managers.
How to turn a group of strangers into a team (13:07)
TEDNYC: “Business school professor Amy Edmondson studies “teaming,” where people come together quickly (and often temporarily) to solve new, urgent or unusual problems. Recalling stories of teamwork on the fly, such as the incredible rescue of 33 miners trapped half a mile underground in Chile in 2010, Edmondson shares the elements needed to turn a group of strangers into a quick-thinking team that can nimbly respond to challenges.”2
The surprising ingredient that makes businesses work better (14:06)
TED@BCG Milan: “What is it about unfairness? Whether it’s not being invited to a friend’s wedding or getting penalized for bad luck or an honest mistake, unfairness often makes us so upset that we can’t think straight. And it’s not just a personal issue — it’s also bad for business, says Marco Alverà. He explains how his company works to create a culture of fairness — and how tapping into our innate sense of what’s right and wrong makes for happier employees and better results.”3
The gift and power of emotional courage (16:48)
TEDWomen2017: “Psychologist Susan David shares how the way we deal with our emotions shapes everything that matters: our actions, careers, relationships, health and happiness. In this deeply moving, humorous and potentially life-changing talk, she challenges a culture that prizes positivity over emotional truth and discusses the powerful strategies of emotional agility. A talk to share.”4
The secret to great opportunities? The person you haven’t met yet (14:06)
TEDxOhioStateUniversity: “We often find ourselves stuck in narrow social circles with similar people. What habits confine us, and how can we break them? Organizational psychologist Tanya Menon considers how we can be more intentional about expanding our social universes — and how it can lead to new ideas and opportunities.”5
How to build (and rebuild) trust (15:06)
TED2018: “Trust is the foundation for everything we do. But what do we do when it’s broken? In an eye-opening talk, Harvard Business School professor Frances Frei gives a crash course in trust: how to build it, maintain it and rebuild it — something she worked on during a recent stint at Uber. “If we can learn to trust one another more, we can have unprecedented human progress,” Frei says.”6
