Sadly, most employees aren’t going to get the gift they really want this year. As a result, some of them will rebel; others may decide to leave. The majority will subtly alter their efforts in order to make up for being overlooked again this year.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Below are a few suggestions on some presents any employee would welcome. The best part is that none of them costs any money.
Be Present-Minded – Give your undivided attention to each person you encounter during your day.
Become an Active Listener – Patiently listen to and understand the information your employees share with you.
Be Empathetic – Put yourself in the shoes of your employees and understand their feelings and perspectives.
Instill Purpose – Help employees understand how what they do (individually and as a group) matters to others and the company.
Practice Individualization – Regard each employee in a distinctive, meaningful way.
Provide Development Opportunities – Help each employee gain knowledge and skills to further their careers.
Bestow Recognition – Acknowledge employee behaviors, efforts, and accomplishments that support the company’s goals.
Offer Automony – Allow employees to have input into and control over their work.
Improve Communication – Have regular conversations with your employees in which you are a distributor and recipient of information.
Embrace Transparency – Be open and honest when sharing positive or negative information about the company in relation to how it affects employees.
Any of the items above would make a nice present for your employees. However, all of these presents can be tied up into the one ultimate gift employees really want: the gift of employee engagement. It’s not too late. There is no wrapping involved and the price is right. Actually, you can’t afford not to share this gift.
What are your thoughts on each present listed above? In what ways do you provide your employees with the gift of employee engagement?
